Civil Engineering @ a glance
Civil Engineers convert complex ideas into realities. They help in making innovative structures in the world.”Civilians” are in fact the true nation “builders” Considered a pioneering branch of engineering, Civil Engineering is the art and science of designing the infrastructure for a society. Civil Engineers are involved in every aspect of community infrastructure, housing and constructions.
Civil Engineers are involved in three areas of activity, namely, Designing, Construction and Maintenance. They contribute to design and construction of bridges, tunnels, roads, railways, airways, dams, pipelines and major buildings. In addition,Civil Engineers safeguard the environment against pollution of air, land and water, by implementing proper treatment techniques and managing the natural resources for future generation. If you are fascinated by the great structures and amazed by the way they are built, then a degree in Civil Engg. is a must for you. A Civil Engg. student at VCTM is trained with the skill of building the world with proper attitude, love and enthusiasm and provided with a life style in harmony with environment.
The history of Civil Engineering can be traced back to the beginning of civilization when man started building huts for living and invented wheel for transport. Over the years, this field evolved into a branch of engineering which involves the application of physical and scientific principles for solving problems of the society. Civil engineering is a wide ranging profession, including several separate specialized sub-disciplines, its history is linked to knowledge of structures, materials science, geography, geology, soils, hydrology, environment, mechanics and other fields.
Civil Engineers play a very important role in improving the living standards of a society in the form of structural engineers , transportation engineers, water resource and environmental engineers, hydrologists, geologists and geotechnical experts.

VCTM CIVIL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT
Civil Engineers build the world’s infrastructure, which encompasses Railways, Highways, Bridges, Water-works, Skyscrapers, Canals, Wharves, Industrial Buildings, Rapid Transit Systems, Power Plants etc. They deal with the design, construction, maintenance and repair of structures. There are opportunities galore for civil engineers, with new players entering the market and more large-scale developments announced around the globe. The four-year B. Tech program of the Department is dedicated to delivering technically proficient and ethically responsible engineers to the society.
Areas of Study
Civil Engineers are trained in the areas of Surveying, Structural Analysis and Design, Geotechnical Engg., Transportation Engg. and Environmental Engg. Opportunities for higher studies are also available in allied disciplines such as Coastal and Ocean Engineering, Hydraulic Engineering, Remote Sensing, Irrigation Engineering and Geodetic Engineering.Consultancy Services
The department undertakes both field and lab consultancy works, in the realms of surveying and material testing. Short term courses in Total Station survey and civil engineering softwares like STADD, REVIT, AUTOCAD and PRIMAVERA are conducted for both students and the public, at highly subsidized rates.Department Library
An extremely rich repertoire of information, the department library comprises over 500 titles related to the various subjects of study, in addition to books on general topics. Online access to ASCE journals is also facilitated, with a view to help the students prepare their seminar and project works. A digital repository of books by foreign authors is being developed to instill a global perspective among the students.
Industrial Visits
Industrial visits are instrumental in understanding the theoretical concepts taught in the classrooms. They act as a platform for the students to gain first hand on-site experience and to interact with professionals. Industrial visits are arranged periodically, to centers of academic interest, within and outside the State. The students of the Department of Civil Engineering have undertaken visits to the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation, Malabar Cements, Thumboormuzhi Dam etc.Lab facilities
Top notch laboratory resources are essential for the development of a modern day technocrat. The Department boasts of well equipped labs, manned by highly competent staff. The various laboratories that come under the purview of the Department of Civil Engineering are Strength of Materials Lab, Hydraulics Lab, Survey Lab, Geotechnical Engineering Lab, Concrete Lab, Computer Aided Design (CAD) Lab and Transportation Engineering Lab.Placement
The first batch of Civil Engineering students (2012) has got a 100% placement record. Our students are presently working at US Technologies, Galfar, Shilpa Constructions, Kunnel Builders etc
